The qualification requirement set out is provided by the governing body for trip leading in the UK, but should you feel that a qualification you hold is equivalent to the one laid out below, please e-mail Sports Leaders to let us know. The award itself is outlined below with a link to more information about gaining an instructors qualification. Although we do not currently offer training for trip leading, we encourage people passionate about the sport to take up an instructors qualification as it's a great way to develop your skills and techniques.
Mountain Leaders Award - The mountain leader award allows experienced outdoor pursuits enthusiasts to gain the technical knowledge and skills required to lead groups up mountainsides and into the wilderness. The course provides instruction in group management skills, the ability to navigate in all conditions, the ability to deal with mountain hazards (including steep ground) and highlights awareness of environmental issues. As part of the course requirements, participants must hold a full first-aid certificate, equal to that of wilderness first-aid. This will ensure any staff member attending camp with the mountain leader's award is able to step straight into their role as a trip leader.
