The last Leaders Online episode of the season 2009-2010! It's been great to give you all the information you might need to prepare for the summer adventure of your lifetime! In this episode we also give you some insight into post-camp travel with Trek America.
Have you heard about our Christian Camp Leaders programme?
I met up with Athol over soy mochachoka latte yesterday and had a chat. Athol heads up Christian Camp Leaders and he was telling me about joining this programme. First he told me that it will increase the number of camp jobs that you are eligible for. It does not discount you from consideration with other camps. I was interested in the opportunity and got more info from him.
The Christian Camp Leaders programme is looking for people with an active Christian faith: who are active in their community and who want to give back to the global community. You will have the chance to serve and you will learn more about yourself, your faith and others.
The spectrum of Camps served by Christian Leaders ranges from nominal to fully immersed. He gave me two examples of the very different camps:
Camp Shine is an all boy's camp based in Wisconsin. Every summer 150 kids get the chance to spend two weeks on the shores of a beautiful lake. The get up early for flag raising and then head to breakfast. They sing grace outside the dining hall before every meal and then Joe the Camp Director says a short blessing. Every evening the campers have a short time of reflection and on Sundays Joe holds a 30-minute service. The campers have the opportunity to reflect on the lucky position that they are in and they also take time to grateful for all they have. The camp is based on traditional Christian values and a spirit of brotherhood is intentionally fostered.
Camp Salvation is based in Louisiana and is a co-ed (boys and girls) camp. Camp Salvation brings Christian life closer to everyday life in a number of ways, and also keeps fun high on the agenda! The daily agenda is similar to Camp Shine with a few additions and a biblical theme that is clearly highlighted. Each morning the campers have 30 minutes devotion time during which they reflect and study the bible. During the day the campers will have the option of a bible study as one of their activities, as well as horse riding, swimming, soccer and lots more, with each of the activities being taught through the values of the church. Some of the counselors who head out to Camp Salvation see this as their first mission, an opportunity to do Gods work in the wider world with the chance to bring new skills home to their congregation. Camp Salvation is a place for people who have the desire to grow closer to God.
I was surprised by the spectrum of these camps. As you can see the focus of the Christian camps have their similarities and differences, and this is the reason that Camp Leaders are looking for a diverse group of Christian Camp Leader Counselors.
