Frequently Asked Questions
- How old do I have to be to enroll on the Camp Leaders program?
- You must be at least 18 years of age by June 1st in the year in which you wish to travel.
- How do apply for one of the programs?
- In order to ensure that the cost to the participants is kept as low as possible we only accept on-line applications. If you wish to apply for the program you will need to set up an account on our web site by clicking on the apply link.
- What if I want to find out more?
- All of the general information you require should be listed on the website, but if you cannot find it or if you have a specific question that is not answered you can contact us by email info@campleaders.com . If you would like to talk to someone in our US office or one of our other country offices please visit the contacts page to obtain the information you require.
- What is the latest date I can depart for camp?
- You need to be available anytime before 20th June. If you have a later departure date you should discuss your specific circumstances with a member of the Camp Leaders team before applying.
- Can I apply to go to the same camp as my friend?
- We cannot guarantee that you will be placed with your friend, but if you request this we will attempt to place you together. The difficulty is that Camp Directors are looking for people with specific skills and so it is not always possible to match 2 people to 1 camp.
- Do I have to arrange my own flights, insurance and visa?
- No. Once you have been accepted onto the program it's time to get excited about your summer ahead. We will work with your camp to arrange your transatlantic travel. We will organise your insurance and visa, although you will be required to go to the US Embassy to have you visa application approved.
- Is there a fee for the visa interview?
- Yes, the US Government have introduced an interview fee which you will be expected to pay to them when you go to the Embassy. Once you are accepted onto the program we will be able to tell you more about this process. The fee in 2006 was $100US. The U.S. Government charges some nationalities including Australian's a "Reciprocity Fee", this varies by nationality, for example Australian's are charged $130AU.
- Am I able to travel in the US after camp?
- Yes, your camp contract is for a minimum of 9 weeks (you will be paid extra for any work you do at camp after this 9 week period) and on completion of your contract you have the option of staying in the US until your Visa and insurance run out. Many participants take up the opportunity to see the sights of America with new friends made at camp. Others choose to go on organised tours such as those offered by Trek America.
- Am I required to have a criminal record check?
- Yes, all participants on the program are required to have a check as you will be working with children. We will provide you with more information about this once you have started the application process.
- What are the implications if I have a criminal record?
- You will not be eligible for the program.
- What are the restrictions of my visa?
