Why should I teach archery at camp?

Shooting arrows, playing games and creating competitions - if you love archery and would really like the opportunity to teach, then this is a fantastic way to combine your passion with travelling the USA. Archery jobs abroad don’t get better than this.

Camp directors are looking for someone who is passionate about archery and who can inspire the campers within their sessions - even if you haven’t got any qualifications in archery, but some great prior experience, because this skill is so highly demanded, a camp may be interested in hiring you for this role and train you in-house.

What does an archery instructor do at summer camp?

From Katniss Everdeen to Robin hood, campers love to become their heroes during archery at camp. Being an archery instructor in America is incredibly fun and rustic, being out at the target range you’ll be able to work with campers on their stance, aim and shooting technique. With beginners sessions and inter-camp competitions, you’ll typically run sessions throughout the morning and afternoons, for campers all ages and abilities. Camps will have differing equipment and you should be prepared to use long bows and compound bows.

Archery at camp is all about experience, being enthusiastic and engaging. You should be able to provide solid instruction and supervision for campers when at your activity, safety is the number one priority and you should show your awareness.

Archery is a great activity for games, think balloons filled with candy and paint, it’s easily a camper favourite!

Having coached a number of sports before my first summer at camp, I was presented with the opportunity to undertake my archery certification. Although it wasn't my main sport, I knew I had enough coaching experience to make it work. I would teach 3 morning activity periods which involved all cabins having a go at each activity on camp. In the afternoon I ran 2 afternoon electives which the campers could elect to be there. Some of the activities included, shooting ceramic pots, mystery balloons. We also did the William Tell challenge with our stick built mannequin. During each session we also had a competition against the girls camp in which we proved victorious on many occasions.

I had 4 good summers teaching archery and it was great to see campers enjoying an activity they didn't have access to at home and coming back each day to improve their scores

A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How can I make my archery application stand out?

Archery is all about having the knowledge and hours. The more time you can practise and gain experience the better and stronger your application becomes. Look to your local archery club for advice and lessons.

How many children should I expect to teach in one lesson?

Campers will come down to the session as a division (age group). Divisions can range from 10-30 campers. You’ll have the assistance of counselors but it will be up to you to instruct the group.
