Why should I become a fitness instructor?

If you are passionate about fitness and want to educate others then this is the summer fitness job abroad for you. Not only would you be working out and coaching others each day, you’ll also be doing it in the USA.

You’ll need to have plenty of energy and a drive to help others improve. Camp Directors will be looking for someone who has experience in instructing and will be able to provide a dynamic programme for all ages and abilities.

What does a fitness instructor at camp do?

Health and fitness is more important than ever and to many camps this is a new and exciting activity which is highly sought after. Children and young teens at camp are extremely motivated and body conscious so summer camps use fitness camp / gym training as a way of allowing young people to adopt long-term healthy behaviours and achieve fitness goals.

The focus of the sessions tend to be a mix of nutrition, circuits/weights/cardio and mental health. Fitness at camp is an engaging and invigorating activity for the kids and staff alike and you can expect to run sessions for all ages and fitness levels.

From fun, athletic based games for younger campers to strength, core and cardio workouts on gym equipment for teens and staff - you need to be able to demonstrate a wide knowledge and ability to adapt to individual needs.

Coaching fitness at camp was an incredible summer. I got to take a passion of mine and with camps direction turn it into a program where campers could learn to develop themselves and tackle issues such as body image and nutrition in a fun session.

We also ran the sessions for counselor staff, which made for incredible nights off.

How can I apply to be a fitness instructor at summer camp?

When forming yourapplication you’ll be able to choose fitness as a skill. Specify what element of personal training you specialise in and what level you’re qualified to. Go into as much detail as possible; from equipment and training programs to your coaching style, don’t leave anything out. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How can I make my fitness instructor application stand out?

Fitness jobs abroad are all about experience, the more instruction you can provide the further it will go to help your application. If you are really serious, why not look at gaining a qualification?

How many children should I expect to teach in one lesson?

Campers will come down to the session as a division (age group). Divisions can range from 10-30 campers. You’ll be able to work with the counselors to teach in small, fun and manageable groups.
