Why should I teach silversmithing at camp?

Working in silversmithing is completely unique and is an exquisite way to combine your love of jewellery making with working in the United States with children. Build your portfolio and experience a summer like no other.

You’ll need plenty of ingenuity and enthusiasm, teaching silversmithing at summer camp is a completely unique skill set and a camp director shall want to know your own ability and to see your portfolio. Show passion and pride in your work by breaking down a project, explaining the techniques used and the final result.

What does a silversmithing instructor do at summer camp?

One for the creatives, silversmithing and jewellery design at camp is a fantastic experience and completely different way to spend your summer. Campers and staff are both so intrigued to try this skill out and often want to make matching friendship jewellery. Working alongside the arts and craft department you shall working mornings and afternoons with all age groups.

The lessons will focus on the basic skills and you can expect to be teaching campers techniques such as sawing, soldering, riveting and bezel setting. Working to weekly themes you shall be helping campers create truly unique pieces. Ones they cannot wait to wear or take home as a gift.

If you are looking for a less traditional summer and something out of the ordinary, then this is the summer for you.

I worked 3 summers in the art centre and each year I was able to develop a skill I had more and more. I loved Silversmithing the most. Campers loved making their own jewellery and it was so rewarding seeing them walk round camp with rings and enamelled necklaces, the best memories we’re when I’d get a whole cabin and they’d all make the same ring in the same colours!

How do I become a silversmithing instructor at camp?

When you begin your application you’ll be asked to select your top skills. Make sure you choose silversmithing. Go into detail about what you’re going to bring to the role, your skill level and if you’re already qualified. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How can I make my silversmithing application stronger?

The more experience working with children you can gain before the summer, the better your application. Look to schools and local art projects to volunteer with and build up your own portfolio through self motivated work or classes.

How many children should I expect to teach in one lesson?

Campers will come down to the session as a division (age group). Divisions can range from 10-30 campers. You’ll have the assistance of counselors but it will be up to you to instruct a small group.
