Camp Leaders works with the top summer camps across America who are looking for great international staff. We're looking for people who are positive, enthusiatic, reliable and experienced to deliver great activity sessions to campers of all ages.
Whatever your skill or talents, there is more likely a job for you at summer camp! As a camp counselor you are not only responsible for a group of children, but in most cases you also teach or assist a specific sport or recreational activity. The different job roles available give you a great opportunity to get involved and stuck in with American camp life.
It is important that you are a skilled participant who is passionate and experienced in one of many popular camp activities. The more skilled you are, the better are your chances of getting placed at a summer camp. Most of the following activities (and many more) can be found at your camp:
Swimming (camps need many lifeguards), Sailing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Motorboat Driving, Jet-Skiing, Water-Skiing
Hiking, Camping, Mountaineering, Rock-Climbing, Boldering, High Ropes Course, Mountain Biking
Horse Riding, Archery, Baseball, Basketball, BMX Biking, Fencing, Gymnastics, Motocross, Roller Hockey, Riflery, Skateboarding, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Trampoline, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball
Choreography, Circus Skills, Costuming, Dance (Modern, Jazz, Folk), Drama, Ceramics & Pottery, Painting, Silkscreen, Woodwork, General Arts & Crafts
As part of your coaching job, you will be responsible for designing, setting up and supervising activities, in which the children will be broken up into groups. You help the kids improve their sports techniques and you are involved in organizing camp-wide games and tournaments.
The best thing is: For your job as a camp counselor you DO NOT need to have a specific coaching qualification! You just need to have the ability and the confidence to lead games and activities with the children and more importantly, be enthusiastic with lot's of energy. But of course, any qualifications you may have, will go a long way in helping you secure that sports coaching job in America. The skill levels of the children will vary, so you as a coach will need to be able to be flexible and adaptable in your work.
Camps will generally run special pre-camp training to ensure that their instructors adhere to the American Camping Association standards, so you’ll need to be a quick learner as well as being hard-working and motivated.
