Why should I teach ceramics at camp?

If you love the throwing down the clay and getting creative then why not teach something you’re passionate about this summer.

Camp directors are looking for skilled individuals to teach ceramics, those who are passionate and can really make clay work exciting and fun for children. If you haven’t taught before but would like to and can confidently use the equipment, then this could be a great opportunity for you - just show your enthusiasm.

This is a fantastic way to have a cultural experience and to build on your own project work, pottery jobs at camp are an extraordinary way to spend your summer.

What does a ceramics and pottery instructor do?

Sculpting masterpieces and firing up the kiln, teaching ceramics at summer camp is a creative and rewarding activity for children all ages. As the ceramics instructor you’ll find yourself teaching each project over 2 sessions - the first working with wet clay and the second allowing the campers to paint and glaze the projects - so they can dry out and be fired in between.

From pots to picture frames, campers love taking their projects home.

You should have creativity and patience. You should look to highlight your ability and skill level with clay work, and show you are able to use a kiln and pottery wheel confidently. Adding a portfolio to your application is also a great way to give insight to you and your style.

After working with ceramics for 3 years within my final piece in GCSE Art and A Level Art, I felt confident with my skills to teach it at camp.

I would teach for 6 or 7 activity periods a day and absolutely loved it, whether it was hand building with clay or making cups, bowls or plates on the wheel, the campers got fully into the activity and loved making their favourite animal into a bowl. The best part was seeing their faces when I brought their projects from out of the kiln (obviously, I waited for them to cool down first.)

Frequently asked questions

How do I become a ceramics and pottery teacher at camp?

When you begin your application you’ll be asked to select your top skills. Make sure you choose ceramics. Go into detail about what you’re going to bring to the role, your skill level and if you’re already qualified. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How can I make my ceramics application stronger?

The more experience working with children you can gain before the summer, the better your application. Look to schools and local art projects to volunteer with and build up your own portfolio through self motivated work or classes.

How many children should I expect to teach in one lesson?

Campers will come down to the session as a division (age group). Divisions can range from 10-30 campers. You’ll have the assistance of counselors but it will be up to you to instruct a small group.
