Summers at camp are way too nice and sunny

If you’re not ready to take on a real, American summer - whether it be sunny Texas, moody Pennsylvania or rainy Maine - this opportunity is probably not for you. I mean, not everyone can equally appreciate an unexpected downpour from nowhere when the only way out is an exclusively tailored, designer trash bag to put on and goof around with your camp friends.

Wakeboarding on the lake for a quick cool-down in a 10-minute break or sliding down the zipline? Casual, everyday things at camp. Nothing special to see here.

Why not have a summer job abroad in the middle of the woods far from polluted cities, possibly on a lakeside, where waves are crushing the rocks right underneath the porch of your bunk. Campers and staff members sometimes even share the camp with lovely, fluffy visitors, you never know when you can say hi to a skunk.

Summer is never going to get any better than an evening spent at the campfire in the middle of a forest or mountains, gazing at the stars above. Memories that you will share forever.

Top tip: the lake can be quite beautiful on chilly mornings when the sun is just rising and the water is steaming from yesterday’s heat.

Summer camp is all about getting out of your comfort zone

Step out of your comfort zone. What a cliché… Why would you leave what you know and instead experience something amazing?

Summer camp in America will make your summer unforgettable and full with memories of a lifetime. You might have fears and not knowing what you’re getting yourself into can feel scary, but trust us, it will be the best decision of your life.

The moment you leave your everyday routine behind and immerse yourself into the unknown, is when you get bitten by that travel bug.

You get to have fun around the campfire

Campfire and marshmallows go hand-in-hand, the definition of a perfect Friday evening. There’s nothing more American summer camp-like than gathering around the fire and roasting marshmallows; best when they’re golden brown from a quick flame burn. Yum!

Milk and cookies, s’mores and marshmallows as basic foods; who eats that many sweets?!

Basically everyone at camp. You can’t have a proper campfire night without marshmallows and to make them even fancier, let them melt a piece of chocolate between two graham crackers and… voilà!

Watch out, s’mores are addictive. Once you taste them, there’s no going back.

Talking about food… introducing the BBQ cookout, Taco Tuesday and ‘grilled cheese’. They’ll become part of your weekly, if not daily, routine!

Pro tip: maple syrup goes perfectly not only with pancakes, but with french toast, scrambled eggs, sausages, waffles and basically everything…

There are too many fun activities to choose from

Not only campers, but staff are also welcome to enjoy facilities at camp during their time-off. Soccer and basketball games in the evenings are a regular fixture and don’t forget about the inter-camp championships. Sounds fun, doesn’t it? From wall climbing to a ropes course, waterskiing to canoeing, woodworking to ceramics you can try yourself in a wide range of activities.

Oh, have we mentioned tubing already? It’s one of the most typical waterfront activities at camp, a must-have when you’re living camp life.

What is this random talent showdown in the middle of a meal?!

Sitting down for breakfast in silence with your cup of coffee, taking your time to wake up? Not at camp. Meal times can’t happen without dancing, singing and fun performances. Doesn’t matter if you’re not the next winner of the X-Factor, just enjoy the moment and go with the flow as the crowd starts singing and clapping “a boom-chicka-boom!”. Then show your backflip. Easy.

You’ll make too many amazing international friends

You can never have too many friends, especially from other countries.

It’s like becoming part of another culture and you can feel like you’re a little bit American, British, Australian, Polish, Hungarian and Mexican, all at once. When it’s time for reunions in the fall or winter, it’s the best meeting your long-time-no-see camp friends and share nostalgic, fun and bittersweet stories about your summer.

Spending your summer in the USA is just too mainstream…

Why not catch the Empire State Building from Spiderman or run up the Rocky steps in Philadelphia.

Hundreds of popular destinations are waiting for you to explore and let’s be honest, what’s better than a roadtrip with your mates along the west coast or learning how to surf on the hawaiian waves?

A little piece of the USA will stay with you forever. The taste of American delicacies, the tune of camp songs, the sparks of fireworks from that 4th July night.

You have to get used to living in camp tees all day everyday

Should I pack these jeans or will the other 8 pairs be enough for 3 months? How can someone fit everything in a suitcase for a whole summer? Unbelievable…

…Until you arrive to camp and realize that half of your stuff has no place at camp. Yeah, you should’ve left that 9th pair of jeans at home.

It is advised that you pack as if you were travelling for only 2 weeks. You’ll need the extra space in your luggage, anyway, for the new stuff you buy at the amazing shopping outlets. Don’t bother about packing too many shirts and tops, camp tees are going to become part of your everyday, you work in it, sleep in it, tie-dye it, go to Walmart in it…

You get to make a camper’s summer

Summer camp wouldn’t be summer camp without carefree, happy campers who make sure everyday feels like Children’s Day. If you’re working with kids, you will become their step-mom or step-dad for the summer and you will see how much impact you can have on their life. Counselors play a huge role in making kids’ summer one-of-a-kind in helping them grow as a person in a fun environment. They have a positive and long lasting impact on kids and let’s face it, this is a highly rewarding thing to say.

You have to have fun at work

At summer camp you’ll have to put up with the fact that you will be working together with a bunch of amazing staff members and kids that will make your time at camp unforgettable. Camp holds a ton of adventures for you, either you work with kids or you’re a support staff member. Do what you love and get paid for it!

You get to disconnect from social media and connect with the real world

“If it’s not on social media, it hasn’t happened!”

Exciting things do happen at camp, even if they don’t end up on your Instagram story. Believe us, if you really live the moment, you won’t even miss posting everything. You can’t explain what camplife feels like, anyway, can you?

Disconnect a little bit and you will see how much your surroundings have to show you. Many camps have a strict policy on the use of electronics but you will see, one week into camp and you won’t even think of your phone.
