Swim Instructor Jobs in America

Inspire on land and water for the summer.

Not only is swimming one of the most popular activities at camp, it's an essential life skill to have.

For some of the younger campers, they may not of had the opportunity to learn some of the basics yet, or they need help to progress.

As a swim coach in America, you'll be able to be an influential person in their life, helping them pick up this potentially life-saving skill.

What is summer camp?

Simply put; it's the summer of a lifetime.

Camp is about 10 weeks of summer sun, unforgettable moments, and experiences that will shape your life.

You'll be involved with leading groups of campers in America, each of who look forward to their time at camp for the entire year.

It's a massive part of American culture, where campers get back to their 'home away from home'. They get to experience being out in nature, trying new activities, and creating their own core memories that will last forever.

You'll have the summer of a lifetime, as will the campers you help.

What's involved with teaching swimming at camp?

Get poolside, Stateside.

Most of your day will be at one of your summer camps pools. We say 'one of', as there's normally quite a few.

It's a super popular activity during 25+ degree heat, so multiple pools and loads of excited campers will help keep each day interesting.

From working one-on-one with certain campers, through to leading group sessions, you'll have the opportunity to pass your swim knowledge onto the next generation.

What swim instruction experience do I need?

Safety first when it comes to swimming.

If you don't have a swim-specific qualification or coaching badge, there's still a place for you teaching swimming at camp if you can demonstrate your competency.

Whether that be through swimming competitions or other demonstrations of you strong swimming ability, we'd happily take the right swimmers on and train them to be leaders.

If you can match that with your passion for swim coaching, we think you'd be a great role model at summer camp.

However, if you have done one of the following, be sure to include it on your application:

  • ASA Level 2 Swimming Teacher
  • STA Swimming Teaching Association Qualification
  • NPLQ/RLSS Certification
Build your CV.

Swim instructor jobs are a great CV-builder, whether you're looking for a future career in football coaching or not.

Swimming coaching work experience at camp will help you develop your leadership skills, which will make you a great candidate for future job opportunities. Swimming jobs at camp are also a great alternative to staying at home for the summer.

Develop your skills

Summer camp is the ultimate skills builder.

Not only will you learn hard skills related to your activity, but you'll develop a range of soft skills thanks to what you'll be doing in your day-to-day.

You'll build your team work, communication, problem-solving, creativity and resilience, all whilst having the summer of a lifetime.

Make an impact

It's no exaggeration to say you'll change lives.

Summer camp is a place where magic happens. Whether it's campers overcoming fears, or finding a new activity that takes them down a new path in life, moments happen on a near hourly basis.

And you'll be front and centre of it.

Experience a summer of a lifetime

Summer camp is the most fun you'll ever have being challenged.

You'll go through the whole range of emotions whilst at summer camp, and you'll come out the other side realising it's the best summer you've ever had.

The friendships, moments, and experiences you'll get are unlike any others, and there'll be very hard to get anywhere else ever again.

Let's start your American swim coaching adventure.

30 days to travel after summer camp

Explore the America you want to see after summer camp.

After summer camp, you'll get 30 days to travel, allowing you the freedom to see whatever you want to see.

The friends you'll make at camp will likely all want to travel together, meaning your adventure with your new friends goes on. Or, if you want to blaze your own trail through solo travel or going on a group tour, you can.

Swim instructor jobs FAQs

How can I apply to be a swimming instructor at summer camp?

When starting your application you’ll be asked to select your top skills. Choose 'Swimming'. Go into detail about what you’re going to bring to the role, your skill level and if you’re already qualified. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How can I make my application stronger without any qualifications?

The best way to make your application stronger is to have the qualifications to back it up. Swim instructor jobs in America are a fantastic way to spend the summer but also very competitive. If you are serious about coaching football in the USA then take a look at courses which may give you confidence and show your skill level.

How many children will I be coaching in one session?

Your swim coaching job will see you teaching various campers divided by age group, alongside multple other swim coaches. These divisions can vary in skill level, but are usually made up of 10-13 campers. You’ll then be paired with an individual camper or a group, and don’t worry - you’ll be supported by your fellow counselors, who will act as volunteer swim coaches. It's a popular activity at camp!

Should I pack any equipment?

You'll have everything you need to carry out your job at camp, so anything you want to bring (maybe to show the kids), is just a bonus. More often than not, you’ll be poolside, so make sure you have the right clothing to complete your activity, both on land and on water.

Don't miss out on a summer job as a swim instructor in America.
