Why should I teach tennis in America?

Tennis jobs abroad are incredibly rewarding. Not only will you spend each day coaching in the sunshine, getting a summer tan stronger than Nadal’s left arm, but you will be making an impact teaching something you love.

You’ll have to be flexible and adaptable to different ages and skill levels within a session and be confident in leading lessons by yourself. With large groups of campers signing up for tennis you’ll also have to bring both safety and responsibility to your role whilst also keeping energy levels high.

You should be energetic and have patience in your coaching - America is searching for their next Pete Sampras or Serena Williams, you might be the hero to make it happen.

What does a tennis coach do?

Fun and exciting, being a tennis coach in the USA is all about providing engaging lessons for budding tennis players of all ages. Tennis is one of the largest and most popular programs at camp (where most sports have 1 or 2 activity specialists tennis tends to have 6+ staff).

You and your team will be responsible for leading 5-6 activities each day as well as any extra or private lessons that were scheduled. With tennis tournaments and inter-camp leagues, there’ll be opportunities for friendly matches and some serious competition.

You should bring games, games and more games. As your lesson plan progresses over the summer you’ll move from coaching the basic skills and drills to putting everything into practice.

I can honestly say that it’s an amazing way to spend a summer abroad. When you look at it simply, you’re being paid to play and coach tennis in the sunshine for 5/6 days a week.

That’s better than anything the U.K can throw at you for two months during the summer.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make my tennis instructor application stand out?

Tennis summer jobs are highly sought after with tough competition. The more experience you having both playing and coaching the better.

How do I become a tennis instructor at camp?

When you begin your application you’ll be asked to select your top skills. Make sure you choose tennis and go to town on what you’re going to bring to the courts. List your qualifications and be confident in your skill level. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

What should I pack if I’m teaching tennis?

You should bring your tennis racket, a lot of spare socks, tennis shoes, hat, sunglasses and a few extra grips alongside your camp packing list. Prepare to be working in the heat so a few clothing changes planned in the day are always on point.
