Why should I teach performing arts at camp?

A chance to teach, to be on stage and inspire a future generation of performers - theatre jobs abroad are an incredibly fun and different way to spend your summer.

Camp directors will be looking for a performer who is equipped with a catalogue of physical, mental and vocal warmup exercises, you should be able to plan and deliver daily classes for all abilities. From contemporary to cabaret and from mime to melodramatics, prepare to be diverse and to be involved - campers love active demonstrations from staff members.

If you are a performer looking for a new experience, then why not tread the boards in the USA. How often can you say you spent the summer teaching theatre in NY?

What does a performing arts teacher do at camp?

Give them the ol’ razzle dazzle. Performing arts at camp is all about the show. From dance to drama, campers love the chance to jump on stage and step into the spotlight.

As part of the camp’s theatre and performing arts team, you’ll spend most mornings and afternoons running lessons and activities with small groups of campers of varying abilities.

From performing arts summer camps to camps with a strong arts program, you’ll likely be part of a bigger production or two throughout the summer. From an all out musical to a dance competition or talent show, always expect variety!

You should bring energy. Being the performing arts instructor is all about motivating and inspiring the campers to get involved. You need to be a confident performing arts teacher and knowledgeable in your niche skill area.

I was hired to work as Dance Coordinator at camp as I had 17 years experience in dance, I also had a bunch of different acting and performance arts experience through University.

As I was the dance coordinator which meant I lead this as an activity during the day but I would also jumped in on camp musical productions and help choreograph performances. My fondest memory is teaching a bunch of the counselors the nutbush dance, everyone loved it and we would flash mob our campers at meal times with it throughout the summer.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make my performing arts application stand out?

As with other performing arts jobs, it's about your own skill level and making sure you have the experience. Look to your local dance schools or amature dramatic society for opportunties to volunteer. Your performing arts application will also heavily benefit from a show reel, look to incorporate this into your showcase and show off your favourite performance pieces.

How do I become a performing arts instructor at camp?

When you begin your application you’ll be asked to select your top skills. You’ll be able to choose your specialised skill set - directing, dance or drama - go into detail about what you’re going to bring to the role, your skill level and if you’re already qualified. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How many children should I expect to teach in one lesson?

Campers will come down to the session as a division (age group). Divisions can range from 10-30 campers. You’ll have the assistance of counselors but it will be up to you to instruct a small group.
