Special Needs Counselor Jobs

What is a special needs camp counselor?

As a special needs counselor, you’ll be there to support and enable campers of all abilities to flourish and have a summer without limits.

From caregiving and leading adventures to generally providing a loving and inclusive environment, being a counselor at a SEN summer camp is all about providing opportunities for campers, no matter their ability.

You don’t need to have previous experience but you will need to have an openness to caregiving, whether emotional or physical (you’ll be able to state your level of comfort in our application) and there will be thorough training provided in your orientation.

Meaningful and rewarding

Anyone who’s been able to work with special needs abroad or at home will tell you how rewarding it is.

Being there to support a camper who needs specialised attention can be intense and hard work but, without doubt, the benefits and meaningful moments far outweigh any challenge.

The camps offer amazing experiences to the campers but also offer support for the family, you’ll learn their stories and will become part of their journey. The difference you’ll make in their lives is incomparable.

This is an opportunity for you to truly develop as a person and open your eyes, mind and heart to a group of incredible people.

Gain hands-on experience.

Special needs jobs abroad are very unique and niche but summer camp ticks the box. If you are looking to work towards a career in SEN, then working with special needs at summer camp is a great way build experience and learn specialised skills in a unique setting. The ratio of campers to counselors is often 1:1 or 1:2, so you’ll be highly involved and active.

You’ll return from camp with hands on experience, increased empathy and a strong work ethic.

Summer camp is a great way to gain special needs work experience.

Learn the value of making it possible

The camps are properly equipped to allow campers to join in with activities, from ropes courses to horse riding, the opportunities for the campers are limitless. If the camper wants to have a go, they’ll do everything in their power to make it happen, which is what makes these camps so important.

It is all about offering the experiences, saying yes to having a go and having the facilities and equipment to make everything possible.

Every child should be able to have the opportunity and it’s the can-do attitude which makes these specialised camps so great to be a part of, whether you're a camper or staff.

You’ll be part of a team.

Similar to the camp counselor, you’ll be part of a close knit team with people from all around the world.

Even if you’re looking after a camper 1 on 1 you’ll never be on your own and can always look to others for help and support.

Why should I be a special needs counselor?

Being a special needs counselor is the hardest but most rewarding job. You will learn so much about yourself and the campers! As an assistant director, being able to plan out the activities for them, seeing how happy they are with your activity is definitely something that puts you in a good mood!
