Why should I teach sailing & boating at camp?

Love being on the water? Want to spend a summer with sunshine on your back as you ride the waves? This is the role for you.

Boat jobs at camp are the ultimate outdoor experience. Whether you spend your summer working on the lake, gliding down the Hudson river, or even getting out into the wide-open Pacific ocean, it doesn't get better than this.

Camp Directors will be looking for dedicated and knowledgeable staff for the waterfront. Boating or sailing experience will go a long way toward nailing down one of these roles at camp - after all, safety on the water is very important, especially when working with groups of kids at camp.

What should I expect from a boating & sailing job at summer camp?

Work a boat skipper job at camp this summer.

Set sail and spend your summer cruising on the lake or in the ocean. Boat crew jobs at camp are an incredible way to spend your summer. As a sailing and boating instructor, you’ll be instructing a range of water-based activities, developing skills and increasing campers confidence on the water. Capable of sailing a training boat in strong winds and handling small powerboats, boating instructors work closely with the lifeguards and at many smaller camps may even be involved in lifeguarding duties if qualified.

Having an eagerness to get on board is essential for sailing jobs, as at the majority of camps, you’ll be responsible for the maintenance of the docking area, boathouse and boating equipment.

As a sailing and boating instructor, you can expect to be working with all ages and abilities. Everyone wants to be on the water.

Having a watersports background meant I was able to adapt to any of the waterfront activities. I worked 5 out of 6 activity periods a day, with either one age group or a mix each time. I loved taking the campers out on the water, and seeing their confidence grow over the summer.

Being on the water for the summer has its perks, especially being able to jump in whenever we wanted to cool off.

How can I apply for sailing and boating instructor jobs at summer camp?

When you begin your application you’ll be asked to select your top skills. Make sure you choose sailing and go into detail about what you’re going to bring to the role. List your qualifications and be confident in your skill level. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How can I make my application stronger?

As with any sailing job - gaining the hours instructing and having a good knowledge of the boats you’ll be working with is essential. The more you can build this the stronger your application will be. If you are keen to go further and get qualified, look to the RYA for further information on their courses.

How many children will I be coaching in one session?

Campers come down to sessions in age group divisions. These divisions can vary in skill level, but are usually made up of 10-13 campers. You’ll then be paired with an individual camper or a group, and don’t worry - you’ll be supported by your fellow specialists and counselors.
