Swim teachers are highly sought after by summer camp. Camp Directors are looking for responsible and motivated individuals who really want to help campers improve their swimming skills. Showing your enthusiasm and knowledge is key.

It’s a fantastic way to gain more experience, increase your coaching performance and above all, have the chance do it in the USA.

Jump in - being swimming instructor is an active, exciting and highly rewarding role at camp.

As a swim instructor, you’ll spend most of your time down at the pool or waterfront, helping campers learn and practise their swim strokes. From first time nervous swimmers to olympic level powerhouses, you can expect diversity in the skill level of the swimmers, their confidence and the support needed.

You may even play an active role in the lifeguarding team whilst other swim instructors lead sessions or at camp-wide pool parties.

You need to be a strong swimmer and if you don’t have previous experience in teaching swim you must demonstrate you are able to. A director is going to want to know your experience level and coaching style and how you will bring energy and fun to the pool side.

An average camp day was split into 6 periods and I generally spent 2-3 of these teaching or coaching swimming. I had the opportunity to teach complete beginners right up to coaching competitive swimmers for inter-camp tournaments, and the variety of rewarding opportunities in the role was a huge part of the reason I returned as a swim instructor for 3 years.

Camp was a different environment to the swimming I taught at home and I loved having the opportunity to get creative and have fun with the campers to teach them vital water-safety skills.

How do I become a swimming instructor at camp?

When you begin your application you’ll be asked to select your top skills. Make sure you choose swimming instruction and go into detail about what you’re going to bring to the role. Talk about your current experience level and if you’re already qualified. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How can I make my swimming instructor application stand out?

If you’re keen to teach swimming in America then we’d suggest getting qualified - Certifications make all the difference for all swimming instructor jobs. As although the US camps will be wanting an American red cross certification (which you’ll be able to do at camp) you’ll find that experience and country specific certifications will make all the difference to your application.

How many children should I expect to teach in one lesson?

Campers will come down to the session as a division (age group). Divisions can range from 10-30 campers. You’ll then be paired with a camper or a small group. Swimming at camp will be tailored to ability level and it’s unlikely you’d be teaching a whole class at the same time.
