Camp directors are looking for people with experience. Show off your skills through an online gallery or portfolio of your work, drawing attention to the skills used and how you will be able to teach this to others.

What does a woodwork instructor do at summer camp?

Woodwork is a very popular activity for the kids at summer camp - as how often do you get your hands on real power tools?

As the woodwork instructor you'll bring the creative energy, knowledge and construction experience. You’ll find yourself forming weekly projects for all skill levels, from small picture frames, to bird houses and even set design for the theatre department.

Working with the campers on their woodwork technique and judging their skill level/ ability to use the tools - you will be responsible for the safety of those in the studio and to provide the instruction and means to create the designed projects - even the highly ambitious and elaborate ones!

You should being creativity and design. A level of maturity is needed for woodwork/ carpentry at camp as there will be a lot of machinery - hand and power tools - which are very hazardous when left unsupervised. Showing a full understanding of safety procedures is vital.

I've worked with wood since before I can even remember and had some great memories working with my dad to create new projects.

I was open to teaching anything at camp but was nervous and excited when I was chosen to teach woodshop.

For 6 periods a day I got to create the kids wildest dreams and in doing so I got to teach them life long skills but also expand my own. From bunk boxes to can crushers, nothing gave me greater joy then seeing the kids walk out of woodshop with a finished project.

Frequently asked questions

How do I become a woodwork or carpentry teacher at camp?

When you begin your application you’ll be asked to select your top skills. Make sure you choose woodwork. Go into detail about what you’re going to bring to the role, your skill level and if you’re already qualified. A camp director will then be able to assess if you’re a good fit and invite you to their camp.

How can I make my woodwork application stronger?

As with all carpentry jobs abroad - the more experience working with children you can gain before the summer, the better your application. Look to schools and local art/carpentry projects to volunteer with and build up your own portfolio through self motivated work or classes.

How many children should I expect to teach in one lesson?

Campers will come down to the session as a division (age group). Divisions can range from 10-30 campers. You’ll have the assistance of counselors but it will be up to you to instruct a small group.
